Every Kid Needs A PAL

Discovery, Education, Enrichment & Mentoring

The Memphis Shelby PAL mentoring program is a grant-funded mentoring initiative which coordinates a relationship for young people, ages 8-13 and 14-18, facing peer challenges and needing support to succeed.

The mentor staff will recruit professional adults to be trained as volunteer mentors based on recommendations from trusted adults, community leaders, and youth in the communities. Further screening of these potential mentors will be done through background screening and face-to-face interviews to assess their attitudes toward inner city youth.

Each mentor will be assigned at least 4 youth to engage with twice a month for 11 months of the year with each session lasting two hours.  Mentors are responsible for monitoring the well-being of the youth by providing guidance and developing life skills, giving love, attention, and encouragement, and helping to ensure they are healthy and safe.

Using the McGruff and Community Works curriculum, the mentors will engage the mentee in fun activities and conversations about such topics as gang awareness, bullying, sexual assault, etc. Each mentor is tasked with helping each young person define individual goals and incorporating the key lessons from the noted curriculum to achieve those goals. Since the expectation of each child will vary, some of the main responsibilities of the mentor will be to encourage positive decision making and promote high self-esteem.
